NAACSS works with its regional partners and numerous scholars to understand the current moment/s and the often unique issues and pressures facing scholars who specialize and work on the Arab/Middle East region, and whose work is dependent on sustained collaboration with individuals and institutions within the region.

Mapping Knowledge Production Landscapes
Transitions in North America, and in the US in particular, are creating new pressures for regional and international scholars and institutions of higher learning. What are the best ways to marshal resources – intellectual and financial – to support and sustain critical fields of inquiry?
Through this project, NAACSS seeks to perform an assessment of the knowledge production landscape and the current needs of scholars and research institutions of/on the Arab Region/Middle East as well as of diaspora studies scholars and Arab American scholars within the US.
Particular attention will be paid to:
Academic Freedom
Envisioned both as the search for knowledge free from political and ideological interference and the unrestricted mobility and exchange of scholars;
Roles
of Arab/Middle Eastern communities in North America in terms of political participation, cultural expression and rights-based movements; and
Critical Scholarship
on emergent issues;
Diasporic Scholarship
in shaping scholarly, public and political narratives and perceptions of the Arab/Middle East region
Through its initiatives, NAACSS aims to support research and academic collaborations for better understandings of the Arab region and the Middle East.
